Encouraging Wellness and Awareness

The aim of the L.I.F.E. Trail is to provide everyone consistent access to a rare island native habitat, with a two-fold purpose: to create opportunities for health and wellness through physical fitness and to cultivate environmental awareness and land ethic. By enlarging the boundaries of our community to include the land we enhance our collective wellbeing.

More than 500 such trails exist in Switzerland, where construction is funded by Zurich Insurance, which is motivated by common sense, humanitarian values and financial incentives to promote the health of its country’s citizens. The L.I.F.E. Trail is the first official English language Vita Parcours in the U.S. open to the public 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.  The trail was built in collaboration with school and community residents under the guidance of the Vita Parcours Foundation in Marly, Switzerland.

After two years of construction, the first two phases of the Vita Parcours Lopez Island Fitness and Ecology (L.I.F.E.) Trail opened to the public in spring 2009. Hundreds of students, local exercise buffs, nature enthusiasts, families and friends gathered together for a community-wide celebration. Completion of the entrance kiosk and meadow trail will be completed following construction of a nearby retention pond. To explore the trail’s features, see Trail Map.
